  • Pupils of the Week

    Published 08/03/24

Each week, during our Friday Achievement assembly, we celebrate our ‘Pupils of the Week’ from each year group. Pupils are recognised for this weekly award for a variety of reasons and are nominated by their class teacher. They may have excelled in a particular subject through the week; may have shown one, or more, of the school values in abundance, or they may have impressed their teacher, or other staff members with a huge amount of effort. Whatever they are nominated for, they are recognised in the whole school achievement assembly, receive a certificate to take home and get to wear one of our prestigious black and gold t-shirts.
During the assembly, we also celebrate children who have 100% attendance for the week and have been in school every day on time. A lucky dip, of all children who are eligible takes place, and one pupil walks away with £5 to spend on whatever they want, Standards and presentation of a child’s book, chosen at random, are also reviewed and celebrated with the school and the child, whose book has been chosen, has the chance to win a dip out of the basket of goodies, as long as they have used their best handwriting every day, completed their feed forward marking and taken care in the presentation of their date and learning objective. We are extremely proud of all of the efforts of our pupils and the Friday Achievement assembly recognises this pride.

  • World Book Day!

    Published 08/03/24

World Book Day 2024 was a fantastic day at Smith’s Wood Primary Academy! Both pupils and staff came dressed in their comfiest clothes and PJs, ready to enjoy a wealth of book-related fun.

The children took part in World Book Day assemblies, themed lessons (based on their favourite books), listened to a guest teacher reading and received their World Book Day tokens to spend on a book of their choice. Here are some photos of the children enjoying their day celebrating the world of books.

Not only this, many pupils created incredible ‘Story Jars’ as part of this year’s competition, demonstrating their love of books. Well done to everyone who participated – all of the entries were so impressive!

Congratulations to all of our winners (as selected by pupils in each class). For pictures of the winning jars and more pictures from the day, please see our gallery.

  • Young Parliamentarians Trip to Westminster

    Published 06/03/24

On Monday, some Year 6 pupils had the amazing opportunity to visit Westminster in London to discover the Houses of Parliament. Each child was selected as they are one of our 'young leaders' (this means they are either a House Captain, Peer Listener, Wellbeing Warrior or SWAG representative). These 12 children have also been attending a club each week in the lead up to this visit to learn more about politics.

The day started with going to Birmingham International and taking the train to Euston Station. Once we arrived, we had to get the underground tube from Euston to Embankment, where we walked along the River Thames towards the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. Our morning was spent being given a tour of the Houses of Parliament from Gill, who showed us the House of Commons and the House of Lords, which was an incredible experience. After the tour, we were able to have lunch with our local MP - Saqib Bhatti - who asked us all about the debates we've been having in our parliament club.

Not only did we get to tour the Houses of Parliament, but we also had the chance to go onto Downing Street and have our photos outside number 10, where we even saw the famous 10 Downing Street cat named Larry! Throughout the day, we were able to talk to many different people who worked in politics and for our government.

During the visit to London, we also got to walk to Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and see the London Eye! Everyone had an incredible time  and were thankful for the once in a lifetime opportunity.

  • Year 1’s Journey to Space!

    Published 27/02/24

Year 1 enjoyed a magical space themed day filled with fun activities to bring our fantastic ‘Man on the Moon’ topic to an end. In Maths, the children used shapes and nets to create rockets. We listened to a real-life Astronaut who told us a story from her rocket in space - it was amazing! Then, we wrote instructions to make a rocket in Phonics. In the afternoon, we practically made our rocket from lots of different materials, designed a space suit and completed an obstacle course for the final stage of Space Camp. All Year 1 children impressed staff with their enthusiasm and attitude towards activities, we really did have “The BEST day ever!”
