Spelling Curriculum Intent

At Smith’s Wood Primary, we believe that children who are secure using spelling patterns will be confident, independent writers. When pupils are confident in their spelling, they are more creative in their writing. Understanding spelling rules allows pupils to proof-read their work, improve their reading and help them to learn Topic specific vocabulary.

Pupils will be taught spellings specific to word lists for their year group. Furthermore, spelling patterns are taught in an order to avoid repetition between year groups. Spellings are taught in engaging lessons, here pupils will learn about root words and that there is more than one way to spell a sound. Teachers model correct use of spoken English and pupils will be actively encouraged to do the same. This will help to avoid misconceptions with spellings.
