These children have been nominated by their class teachers to receive an end of term prize. This is a prestigious award, as the pupil of the term nominations are for those children who have impressed their teachers repeatedly over the whole of the Autumn term. We would like to congratulate all of our pupil of the term winners and thank them for showing the school values in abundance this term. We are extremely proud of all of the efforts of our pupils and the Friday Achievement assembly recognises this pride.

Each week, during our Friday Achievement assembly, we celebrate our ‘Pupils of the Week’ from each year group. Pupils are recognised for this weekly award for a variety of reasons and are nominated by their class teacher. They may have excelled in a particular subject through the week; may have shown one, or more, of the school values in abundance, or they may have impressed their teacher, or other staff members with a huge amount of effort. Whatever they are nominated for, they are recognised in the whole school achievement assembly, receive a certificate to take home and get to wear one of our prestigious black and gold t-shirts.
During the assembly, we also celebrate children who have 100% attendance for the week and have been in school every day on time. A lucky dip, of all children who are eligible takes place, and one pupil walks away with £5 to spend on whatever they want, Standards and presentation of a child’s book, chosen at random, are also reviewed and celebrated with the school and the child, whose book has been chosen, has the chance to win a dip out of the basket of goodies, as long as they have used their best handwriting every day, completed their feed forward marking and taken care in the presentation of their date and learning objective. We are extremely proud of all of the efforts of our pupils and the Friday Achievement assembly recognises this pride.

The room was buzzing with energy as everyone got stuck into creating bold, textured rainforest art pieces, experimenting with different materials and techniques. It was fantastic to see so many adults joining in, supporting, encouraging, and even getting a little messy alongside the children! Laughter, imagination, and teamwork filled the space, and the children absolutely loved every moment, proudly showing off their unique creations.

On Thursday 5th March, Smith's Wood Primary Academy took part in World Book Day, taking part in different activities all day and helping children to find their reading identity. With 2026 being the National Year of Reading, Smith's Wood Primary have decided to 'Go All In', and are participating in many activities throughout the year to help promote and encourage pleasure for reading.

Throughout the day, children were creative in designing their own reading shields based on their hobbies, interests and genres, before becoming 'book detectives' and helping their teachers find appropriate books to recommend. They then discovered their reading identities through a quiz shared by The Literacy Trust, and had discussions surrounding the types of books they do and do not enjoy. It was an important message that not everyone needs to enjoy the same book, and that every child has their own reading identity to uphold and be proud of.

After lunch, the children looked at multimodal reading, and shared things that they read which aren't books. We had children bringing into school their weekly shopping lists, LEGO manuals, football magazines and even receipts and postcards, to discuss how reading is an important life skill - not just for reading books, but for every aspect of their life as they grow. Towards the end of the afternoon, all children had the opportunity to share their favourite texts with a partner from a different class. We had sisters dressed as Dorothy and Alice in Wonderland reading to each other, as well as a child dressed as Dog Man, reading with a Year 6 boy who absolutely loves the Dog Man stories.

The whole day was surrounded in a love of reading that everyone enjoyed, and was topped off by the Children's Book Project! This is an incredible charity who donate books to our school, therefore we held a free book fair where every single child had the chance to take home a free book. A huge thank you to the Children's Book Project for making this possible.

Last night's year 4 dodgeball tournament delivered all the drama, energy, and friendly rivalry students hoped for. Teams from Bat, Super, Spider, and Hulk houses packed into the sports hall yesterday afternoon, each determined to out‑throw, out‑dodge, and out‑last their opponents.
From the opening whistle, the atmosphere was electric. Bat House impressed early with sharp coordination, while Super House earned cheers for their fearless dives and last‑second saves. Hulk House brought sheer power to the court, launching throws that echoed off the walls and sent spectators into roars.
But it was Spider House who stole the show.
Displaying a mix of agility, teamwork, and uncanny timing, Spider House swept through the group stages and secured a place in the final. In a tense showdown against Hulk House, Spider’s players dodged with lightning reflexes and landed decisive hits that turned the tide in their favour. When the final player was eliminated, the hall erupted.
🏆 Spider House were crowned champions and awarded 200 house points!
Teachers praised the sportsmanship shown across all houses, noting that the event highlighted not only athletic skill but also camaraderie and school pride. Students left buzzing, already speculating about next year’s rematch.

This year, Children’s Mental Health Week is taking place between Monday 9th February and Friday 13th February, and is a way of bringing awareness and care to improving children’s mental health.
The theme this year is ‘This Is My Place’, and we are offering children the opportunity to take charge of their own safe spaces in school. From talking to the children, we understand that break and lunch times are fantastic ways of socialising with their peers, but children have outlined that they would love some more resources to use during these social times.
As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, our Wellbeing Warriors have decided to host a non-uniform day to raise money to buy these resources. On Friday 13th February, which is the last day of term, all children are invited to wear their own clothes for a minimum contribution of £1 on ParentPay. This money will be used to buy new resources and play equipment for KS1 and KS2 playgrounds, including updating the Learning Lodges on the KS2 patio.

Forget Clarkson's Farm, forget Marvel Avengers, the true Endgame happened last night at Smith's Wood Primary Academy. 10 brave and noble warriors graced the hall for the final of the Smith's Wood Games House Competition. Trust, honesty, integrity and friendship were all tested to their limits last night as our brave competitors battled for the grand total of 1200 house points and the prestigious honour of being the first ever Smith's Wood Games Champion. The games saw pupils test their problem-solving and analytical skills as they tried to work out who had been truthful and who had been ruthless. At the end of the night, our final 2 challengers faced off in a game of wits to decide if they would both leave with a split total of 600 points or if one lucky winner got to steal the prize all for themselves. In an unprecedented turn of betrayal, both players tried to steal the glory and ended the night without taking home a single house point, proving once and for all, that greed never prospers!

Pupils competed against each other for a grand total of 1200 house points, the challenges tested the fortitude of every pupil and pushed their teamwork skills to the limit as they battled to stay in the game. Pupils were required to reflect on and apply their personal strengths, values, and decision-making skills. The games required pupils to:

Encourage resilience and emotional regulation

Require trust, communication, and collaboration with peers

Place pupils in situations where outcomes may feel unfair or outside of their control

Support pupils in managing disappointment and elimination constructively

Push pupils beyond their comfort zones and into meaningful self-reflection on character and behaviour

At the end of the night only 10 pupils remain to continue the competition this week!

On Thursday 11th December, children from the Year 4, 5 and 6 choir went to visit a local nursing home to help get them into the Christmas spirit! They have been learning songs in choir club for the last 5 weeks and they have been extremely excited to share them. The music was loved by the residents, some even joined in by singing along or clapping. The children performed fantastically and really enjoyed themselves - they even sang the songs all the way back in the mini bus! We're definitely all feeling festive now!
