This week Year 3 continued their scientific learning by taking a trip to Coombe Abbey. Here they were able to sketch flowers in the Wildflower Meadow before journeying to Top Pool to enjoy a lovely lunch whilst practicing their observation skills on the local wildlife.
Year 3 were able to build on their fantastic team work skills by playing some team building games before continuing on to the Bird Hide to see some animals in their natural habitat. A great time was had by everyone!

A spot of royalty this week for Year 1, as they embarked on a magnificent journey to Tamworth Castle. The children were amazed and taken aback by the castle, where they were able to explore features we had learned about in school, such as; the Barbican, Bailey, portcullis, turrets and arrow loops. They were fully immersed in the experience, dressed for the occasion in royal costume. The children walked around the castle, had time to sketch, explore the flower steps, dance in the bandstand, view a real cannon, enjoy an ice lolly and play medieval games. All children and staff had a wonderful day, enjoying all the activities immensely - what a fantastic day had by all!

On the last day of term (Wednesday 21st July) we would like the children to take part in an end of year party. It has unfortunately been another unusual and disrupted academic school year, but as ever, the children of Smith’s Wood Academy have coped brilliantly with the changes and made us all proud with their resilience and attitude to their learning.
The parties will take place in class bubbles as we are maintaining class bubbles for the remainder of the term. Children are welcome to bring in a board game (no electronics) in a named bag to share with their friends during the party. Please note that whilst the children will be supervised please do not send in expensive or precious board games in case of them accidently becoming damaged.
Please can you also send in your child with a sealed plate (or tupperware) of party food for them to enjoy at the party. In previous years we have asked for an item of food to create a class buffet, however we are still keen to minimise sharing between children, and for hygienic purposes will not be allowing children to share items of food. This will also ensure that children who have food allergies will be catered for, as children will only consume the food they have brought in for themselves.
The parties will take place for Nursery during their normal session, and during the afternoon for the rest of the school. Please note that Year 6 will have their own different end of school party and those plans have been communicated directly to Year 6 parents.
This week year 5 had the opportunity to attend an education visit to Dovedale in the peak district. Children were amazed at the natural beauty in one of our countries national parks. Pupils explored the river Dove, listened to traditional stories on lovers leap and searched for roman treasure in Reynard’s cave. Pupils enjoyed themselves immensely and have expressed great enthusiasm to embark on further trips in the great outdoors!

Year 2 were able to apply their creative thinking while taking a trip to St Nicholas’ Park in Warwick. They were able to imagine standing in the crystal clear waters of the seaside whilst paddling in the crystal clear waters at the park, all linking to their topic “Oh I do like to be beside the Seaside”. Year 2 then managed to show off their impressive team building and sports skills with a few games of football and rounders swiftly followed by some delicious ice cream, what a fantastic day out!

On St George's Day, Year 3 students wrote letters to the Queen asking her about her life and sending their wishes to her after the news of Prince Phillip. We were extremely excited to receive a response from the Lady in Waiting from Windsor Castle yesterday. She was sending her thanks from the Queen and a couple of information leaflets about her life for the children to read and learn from.
Please see the attached for the response from Windsor Castle
This week, Year 4 enjoyed a trip to Sutton Park where they completed a variety of exciting outdoor activities relating to their topic, 'Live and let live'. During the day, they worked in teams to build dens using outdoor resources, saw lots of different wildlife and mini beasts in their natural habitats, identified different trees, did tree rubbings, created story sticks using items that they collected, and enjoyed the great outdoors! They ended the day enjoying a delicious ice-cream to cool them down!
