Pupils at Smith’s Wood Primary Academy stepped back more than 2,000 years this week as Year 5 hosted a vibrant and educational Ancient Greek Theme Day, transforming classrooms into scenes from classical history.
Excitement was high as children arrived at school dressed in beautifully crafted ancient Greek-style outfits. Flowing tunics, handmade sashes, and laurel wreath headpieces filled the corridors, bringing the spirit of Athens and Sparta to life. Many pupils and families had taken great care in designing the costumes, using simple materials to recreate historically inspired clothing.
“It really felt like we’d travelled back in time,” said one Year 5 pupil. “Everyone looked amazing, and it made learning about the Greeks even more fun.”
The highlight of the day was a hands-on pottery workshop, where pupils explored one of the most famous aspects of ancient Greek culture. Using clay and traditional design techniques, the children created their own pots inspired by classical Greek art. They carefully etched patterns, mythological scenes, and geometric designs into their work—just as ancient artisans did centuries ago.
Teachers guided the pupils through the process, explaining the importance of pottery in ancient Greek daily life. From storing food and water to telling stories through detailed illustrations, the lesson helped bring history into a tangible, creative experience.
Throughout the day, pupils also took part in themed activities exploring Greek mythology, daily life, and the origins of democracy. Some classes even recreated short performances of famous myths, adding an extra layer of excitement to the immersive experience.
