  • Florence Nightingale day

    Published 30/03/23

Year 2 were transported to Florence Nightingale’s hospital for a day of exciting learning. We were amazed by the incredible array of nurses and doctors who arrived ready for hospital school. Pupils loved making their own Fanoos lantern, before conducting a hospital inspection and making their own medals to celebrate the incredible work of Florence Nightingale. We were impressed to hear the links that pupils made between our own school values and nursing values. This was a great opportunity for us to discuss the importance of the British Value of respect. A fantastic day was had by all!

  • Pupils of the Week

    Published 24/03/23

Each week, during our Friday Achievement assembly, we celebrate our ‘Pupils of the Week’ from each year group. Pupils are recognised for this weekly award for a variety of reasons and are nominated by their class teacher. They may have excelled in a particular subject through the week; may have shown one, or more, of the school values in abundance, or they may have impressed their teacher, or other staff members with a huge amount of effort. Whatever they are nominated for, they are recognised in the whole school achievement assembly, receive a certificate to take home and get to wear one of our prestigious black and gold t-shirts.
During the assembly, we also celebrate children who have 100% attendance for the week and have been in school every day on time. A lucky dip, of all children who are eligible takes place, and one pupil walks away with £5 to spend on whatever they want, Standards and presentation of a child’s book, chosen at random, are also reviewed and celebrated with the school and the child, whose book has been chosen, has the chance to win a dip out of the basket of goodies, as long as they have used their best handwriting every day, completed their feed forward marking and taken care in the presentation of their date and learning objective. We are extremely proud of all of the efforts of our pupils and the Friday Achievement assembly recognises this pride.

Our weekly winners this week are:

  • Year 1 Hand's on History Club!

    Published 24/03/23

The children in Year 1 have gone back in time learning about the past. We have travelled through time, learning about castles in the Middle Ages, making split-pin knights, and practising Medieval dancing; learning about Victorian toys and building a paper boat that we tested on water; learning about dinosaurs and creating playdough dinosaurs; learning about volcanoes and conducting an experiment; and learning about Egypt and creating our very own Tutankhamun mask to take home.

Finally, we learned about the history of chocolate and produced our very own chocolate bar wrapper! Then, we ate some chocolate as well as drank some chocolatey milk. What a wonderful time we had, and as quoted by Evie "I don't want this club to end!"

    Published 22/03/23

Smith’s Wood once again cemented their legacy as the home of rowing. Yesterday Smith’s Woods most elite rowers took centre stage at the Regional School Games Regatta! The greatest performers from all around the region put their best oar forward in a chance to gain immortal glory in the halls of the rowing gods! Words cannot begin to describe the immense pride we as a school feel for our super talented pupils. During the competition all Smith’s Wood pupils showed momentous amounts of perseverance and determination, in pursuit of a Gold medal, every pupil shattered their personal bests and can hold their head high with pride that they could not have done any more!

In the face of fierce competition, our boys team secured a mightily impressive 4th place victory out of a staggering 14 elite teams. Later in the day, our year 5 team blew the competition out of the water with their rapid changeovers to secure a well-deserved 1st place Gold medal! Coming in like a speedboat, our girls team put in a polished and professional performance utilising the perfect trio of technique, power and fitness to generate an insurmountable lead securing another 1st place Gold medal.

A special mention to Smith’s Woods own rowing goddess Joeliyn who rowed an incredible 395M in 90 seconds making her the highest performing rower at the entire event!

Huge congratulations and a big thank you to all teams, who have dedicated themselves to intensive training and maintained a positive mental attitude throughout the whole process. Come rain or shine, inside or outdoors our fantastic rowers have put in the work and have reaped the rewards.

  • A Wonderful Week of Wows!

    Published 20/03/23

Science week began with a visitor in assembly from the company Fizz Pop Science, where children were treated to some real life science experiments.  The children thoroughly enjoyed learning new theories and were captivated by the explosions made!  Children spent the week investigating and experimenting the theme of connections ready to present their findings in our very own science fair.  Smiths Wood Science Fair was a triumph this year with children exceeding expectations!  The standard and quality of presentations were impressive and the children enjoyed visiting each year group to find out what they had been learning about.  Each child was given the opportunity to vote for the year group they thought were the best and results will be announced this week.

  • Smith's Wood Students Tackle the Super Science Symposium Spectacular!

    Published 17/03/23

Albert Einstein once said: Creativity is intelligence having fun. Last night intelligence and fun spread through the main hall like wildfire for our first-ever curriculum related House Competition!

Some of Smith's Woods greatest minds from years 2, 4 and 6 were awarded the prestigious honour of representing their houses by competing in a series of science themed experiments. These intellectual titans designed and created a capsule to ensure a safe return for their eggy astronauts from the dizzying heights of the stairway to heaven. The sky wasn't the limit for our young aeronautical engineers as they manufactured their very own paper airplanes to see who could propel their plane the furthest. The third and final experiment saw our brightest students putting their artistic and culinary skills to the test as they demonstrated their vast knowledge of scientific principles to create artwork within the skin of a banana.

School values and scientific principles were on display in abundance with all houses showing Herculean levels of determination and friendship. Special thanks to Mrs Hobbis for organising the event and a well-done for our junior scientist winners, bat house!
