  • Boccia Bonanza!

    Published 16/09/22

Last night, Smith's Wood launched the start of the 2022/2023 house competitions. The atmosphere in the King Power stadium was electric.  Pupils were locked in gladiatorial combat as Boccia balls were propelled through the air. The tension could be cut with a knife as teams battled it out to see who would emerge victorious as the campaign got off to a blazing start. All teams gave a fantastic performance and showed superhuman levels of determination and perseverance, with Spider house narrowly securing the victory for the night. Well done to everyone involved.

  • State Funeral - School Closure

    Published 13/09/22

Following the sad news relating to the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Department for Education have announced that Schools will be closed on Monday September 19th.  This day will be a Bank Holiday to allow individuals, businesses and other organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning.  Therefore, school will close to pupils on Friday 16th September at 3:10pm and Re-open on Tuesday 20th September at 8:45am.

Pupils at Smith’s Wood are taught to understand British Values and Queen Elizabeth has, and will continue to be widely discussed in history, religious education and other curriculum areas in school.  In addition, pupils have received special assemblies designed to commemorate the Queen and have had the opportunity to participate in special activities to commemorate the Queen’s life.

You will have noticed that the school flag has been lowered to half-mast during the period of mourning and the national anthem played as children entered school the day after her passing.  Following the state funeral on Monday, all staff have prepared resources that relate to bereavement through our PSHE curriculum and will be suitably equipped to respond to the needs of all children in school.

Thank you for your continued support.

  • The Not-So-Vile Victorians

    Published 09/09/22

Today, year 6 started their new history topic of the Victorians! Throughout the day, they learnt about the money used in Victorian times and the introduction of the decimal system, studied famous quotes from Oscar Wilde's poetry and created theatre posters for 'The Importance of being Ernest'. This afternoon, they had a go at playing croquet, a game created by the Victorians, and made their own peg dolls. We look forward to the rest of our learning throughout this topic!

  • Keeping safe in the heat

    Published 15/07/22

In light of the upcoming weather forecast for Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th July, please can we ask parents to make sure that their child comes to school with a hat, plenty of liquids to drink and has had sun cream applied. The school will be taking precautionary steps to ensure that the rooms are ventilated and that children do not spend any large amounts of time outside, or in the sun whilst the temperatures are predicted to be so high. Children will have access to drinks throughout the day, with stations being set up outside the classrooms for when children are outside for the short periods of time. If you can ensure that your child is wearing their summer school uniform (summer dress or shorts and a polo shirt), has a hat with them, sunglasses, sun cream and a water bottle which can be refilled, then this will all help to support in the predicted high temperatures.
