  • The Black Country Living Museum

    Published 14/10/22

Yesterday, year 6 pupils had the opportunity to visit the Black Country Living Museum and experience what life was like for children during the Victorian era. Whilst there, the children had the chance to walk around the town, exploring the sweet shop, hardware shop and chemist. They also walked along the canals, looking at the narrow boats and watching a chain-making and nail-making demonstration. As well as this, all 60 children participated in a Victorian school lesson; learning their alphabet backwards, recalling times tables, and even watching Mr Taylor get the cane! This was all followed by some delicious fish and chips for lunch, a visit to the cinema to see a silent 'Laurel and Hardy' film and an insightful talk about coal mining. A fantastic way to end a truly brilliant Victorian topic.

  • Hello Yellow!

    Published 11/10/22

Smith's Wood Primary Academy took part in this year’s #HelloYellow campaign to support young people’s mental health and raise money for Young Minds charity.

Staff and children accessorised with a little something yellow, and enjoyed taking part in a fitness for mental health and mindfulness activity. There was a lovely atmosphere around the school and lots of smiles! We raised awareness of mental health including how we can look after our mental health, people we can talk to if we are struggling, and how we can help others.

We raised £260.60 for Young Minds. Thank you for all donations!

  • The Vicious Vikings of Year 4!

    Published 28/09/22

Today, Year 4 experienced life as a Viking! In Maths, using their knowledge of coordinates, they managed to track down their own dragons, as well as sink their partner’s longboats in battleships. In Guided Reading, children completed their own Viking fact files in runes, followed by Literacy where they became Viking Kings and Queens where they explored different Viking crimes and punishments. In the afternoon, children created their own Viking shields as well as evaluating the durability of their longboats. We look forward riding the seas as we explore this topic in the remaining weeks!
