  • Year 1 Beautiful Butterfly Farm Trip

    Published 07/04/22

On Tuesday, Year 1 visited the Butterfly Farm in Stratford-Upon-Avon! We saw a variety of beautifully coloured butterflies, some of which even landed on us. We learned about the amazing life cycle of a butterfly and saw some of the world's largest and most camouflaged caterpillars, giant silk moths and their cocoons. When we visited the casing, we could see a butterfly beginning to hatch from its pupa! We had a fantastic time strolling through the wonderful world of the tropical, rainforest environment, with beautiful flowers, different animals, splashing waterfalls and fish filled pools. The children had a fantastic time exploring, playing and learning about lots of different creatures and minibeasts!

  • Red Ridge Residential

    Published 01/04/22

Last week, thirty-five children attended a residential trip to Wales to The Red Ridge Centre.  This was the first time back to the centre after a two-year absence.

Over the week, children completed various tasks and achieved many personal accomplishments. Pupils bravely scaled and abseiled in an old mining quarry, caved in an artificial and real cave, completed high ropes tasks, improved their paddling when canoeing and kayaking and improved their teamwork with orienteering. In addition to that, children maintained high standards of manners when out in public with many passers-by commenting on how polite the children were.

It was wonderful to see the children demonstrate our school values of determination to achieve the activity, friendship in supporting and recognising everyone's personal achievements, respect towards each other and the two other schools who were also on site - some with additional needs, perseverance to complete tricky and challenging activities and responsibility for the equipment being used and themselves to be organised.

What an amazing trip to be part of, the children proved they were more than just pupils!

To kick off the Commonwealth Games 2022, which is being held in and the surrounding areas of Birmingham, we were extremely fortunate to have a visit from the official Commonwealth Games team member Amber and the mascot, Perry the Bull!

With Year 3 to 6 in the hall for the assembly and Year 2, Year 1 and Reception watching it live in their classrooms, we had so much fun participating in fun activities and listening to all the exciting things happening in preparation in Birmingham and the events that are to take place at the games.

At the end of the assembly Amber and Perry the Bull visited Year 2, Year 1 and Reception to say goodbye to the children. It was a fantastic start to our celebrations for the Commonwealth Games at Smith's Wood Primary Academy and we were gifted our own Perry the Bull mascot toy to be kept in school!
