To kick off the Commonwealth Games 2022, which is being held in and the surrounding areas of Birmingham, we were extremely fortunate to have a visit from the official Commonwealth Games team member Amber and the mascot, Perry the Bull!
With Year 3 to 6 in the hall for the assembly and Year 2, Year 1 and Reception watching it live in their classrooms, we had so much fun participating in fun activities and listening to all the exciting things happening in preparation in Birmingham and the events that are to take place at the games.
At the end of the assembly Amber and Perry the Bull visited Year 2, Year 1 and Reception to say goodbye to the children. It was a fantastic start to our celebrations for the Commonwealth Games at Smith's Wood Primary Academy and we were gifted our own Perry the Bull mascot toy to be kept in school!

Cycling is a fantastic way to get out and about, explore your local area, socialise with family and friends, and improve your health and wellbeing. Cycling trips are also great for the environment as it’s a pollution-free way to travel.
If you’d like to get into cycling or cycle more often there are plenty of ways to get involved. Solihull has new Community Cycling Hubs and activities to take part in, excellent local cycling groups and clubs, a large network of cycle paths to explore, local route maps, free cycling leader and bike maintenance training opportunities for volunteers and much more.
Please see the attached leaflet for details, for more information, please visit the Solihull active page here

Year 6 got to experience what it was really like to be a Victorian child, during their visit to the Black Country Living Museum. The day started off with a visit to the local school, where they met the very strict Mr Griffiths and experienced how different schooling was like back then compared to now - they even saw Miss Owen and Mr Taylor get a telling off! The children then spent the rest of the day exploring the Victorian village, heading to the sweet shop, the cinema, the chemist and even experiencing how dangerous the gases were in the mines with a live Science show! A great day had by all!

Each week, we celebrate our ‘Pupils of the Week’ from each year group. Pupils can be recognised for this weekly award for a variety of reasons. They may have excelled in a particular subject through the week; may have shown one, or more, of the school values in abundance, or they may have impressed their teacher, or other staff members with a huge amount of effort. Whatever they are nominated for, they are recognised in the whole school achievement assembly, receive a certificate to take home and get to wear one of our prestigious black and gold t-shirts.

Over the course of the last two Thursday's pupils in Year 6 have taken part in a Table Tennis Tournament, representing their house, in an effort to contribute to their house overall total. Table Tennis at Smith's Wood Primary Academy has really taken off this year, the addition of new outdoor tables has ignited significant interest and the standard is representative of pupils who are committed to practice. Through after school provision, lunchtime opportunities and curriculum time physical education pupils have excelled in this sport and the competition reflected such superb enthusiasm. During the two-week tournament, standards improved and all pupils represented their house displaying our school values in abundance. Congratulations go to the Spider house who occupied the first two positions, followed by Hulk and finally Bat house in fourth place.

On Tuesday 1st March, Mrs Evans (Outdoor Education Lead) and Mr Hobbis escorted four green fingered enthusiasts to Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre to participate in a tree planting celebration to mark the Queen's Jubilee year. Pupils at Smiths' Wood Primary Academy participate in outdoor education regularly at school with outstanding enthusiasm, and this day was no different. Planting a variety of trees which will aid the landscape in North Solihull pupils took part in the whole process including the spade work! Congratulations to all pupils for making a valid contribution to the climate but also the local community and as always representing school so well.
