Today, the children and adults of Smith's Wood Primary celebrated World Book Day by dressing as Mr Men or Little Miss characters, to celebrate 50 years of Roger Hargreaves' first book! Throughout the day, all year groups had lessons linked to the Mr Men or Little Miss stories, from correcting Mr Wrong's mistakes in Maths, to creating their own characters and stories in Literacy, all children had a morning filled with Mr Men fun!
During the afternoon, all lessons were linked to the books too, including Year 1's Science experiment from Little Miss Inventor, Year 2 creating medicines for Mr Bump's bruises and Year 3 exploring the rainforest with Mr Adventure. In addition to this, all year groups took part in a Mr Men treasure hunt linked to their orienteering skills, and had to find certain characters and answer questions based on the books! Children were all dressed up and an award for 'Best Dressed' was given to someone from each year group, with the prize of the brand-new Mr Men book! It has been an amazing day for all involved!

Each week, we celebrate our ‘Pupils of the Week’ from each year group. Pupils can be recognised for this weekly award for a variety of reasons. They may have excelled in a particular subject through the week; may have shown one, or more, of the school values in abundance, or they may have impressed their teacher, or other staff members with a huge amount of effort. Whatever they are nominated for, they are recognised in the whole school achievement assembly, receive a certificate to take home and get to wear one of our prestigious black and gold t-shirts.

On Tuesday 15th February, our school was flooded with a range of Disney stars! Pupils were thrilled to be immersed in their own trip to Disneyland. From reading a timetable, to studying a theme park map before writing instructions to participate in a character parade. In the afternoon, all children were beaming as they dazzled with a range of poses and waves in our character parade. The day finished with a themed afternoon tea – just like the treats you could enjoy at Disney. We had an incredible day, well done Year 2!

Yesterday, Year 1 enjoyed a fabulous space filled day. Every activity complemented a tick off their Space Academy list, from making shape rocket nets in maths, writing instructions to build a rocket in phonics and then building a rocket in the afternoon. Children took part in a space themed assault course and designed their own space suit for their missions. Everyone enjoyed the day, fully dressed in colourful costumes and were awarded with their space camp certificates for completing their challenges! It was truly out of this world! ✨

Today the Reception children took part in different fairy tale activities. This week, on Tuesday, pupils at Smith's Wood celebrated Safer Internet Day. The theme this year was healthy relationships online, during the day children discussed which games/app they use online, with friends, and how they interact with others. From this, children across the school created data reflecting the games/apps they engage with. Work from the morning sessions was as a discussion point to help children understand if the games/app they commonly used were suitable for their age. Children were highly engaged and surprised when learning about the correct ESRB ratings for apps/games that they use on a regular basis.
It was wonderful to see how children around the school were able to create help/advice for others about how to manage positive, healthy relationships online. Several great ideas were shown around the school and pupils were enthusiastic and mature when discussing ways to resolve conflict online.
For more information and guides regarding app/game use, as well as several helpful tips for parents/carers, please see the National Online Safety website here

We received an invitation to send entries to a competition celebrating the Commonwealth Games and under the theme of 'Bringing People Together', organised by the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Ken Meeson. Pupils across all year groups, from Year 1 to Year 6, either wrote a story or a poem linking to the theme. A winner will be chosen by Councillor Ken Meeson and will be invited to a special ceremony. A variety of entries from across the borough will be displayed to the public in the North or South across the borough to promote the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
Today, we have celebrated our very own Languages day here at Smith's Wood Primary Academy. Linked with the Beijing Winter Olympics, we have had an abundance of activities linked to all of the countries each class have chosen. From flag spotting in nursery, creating a French cafe in reception, spanish salsa dancing in year 1, tasting Belgium chocolate in year 2, writing Chinese haikus in year 3, translating Romanian words in year 4, creating Norwegian inspired art in year 5 and speed skating numbers in Dutch in year 6. It has been non-stop on our exploration of different languages!
