  • Smith's Wood Clean Air Zone

    Published 16/06/21

Here at Smith’s Wood Primary Academy, Pupils have been helping to support Solihull Council’s anti-idling campaign, asking motorists to switch off their car engines when waiting outside the school gates at school collection time to improve the local air quality.

"Our pupils noticed how many cars were left running outside the school so were really keen to be part of this campaign.  Pupils have been busy designing posters and parents have been given leaflets to highlight the issue, we also have a banner as an active reminder on our school gates. We have all noticed and appreciate the impact of cleaner air as a result of this campaign" - Mr Mills

Councillor Andy Mackiewicz recently visited Smith’s Wood Primary Academy ahead of Clean Air Day (17 June 2021) to find out what pupils are doing to highlight this important issue.

Councillor Andy Mackiewicz, who is responsible for the borough’s Air Quality Strategy, said: “Air pollution is real, it is the top environmental risk to human health in the UK, so, it is lovely to see local young children getting involved in this very important issue.

Well done to all our pupils who are continuing the campaign to help promote a cleaner Solihull!

  • Language Learning at Smith's Wood

    Published 11/06/21

Today, Smiths Wood celebrated the start of the Euros competition, each year group chose a qualified country and the children had the opportunity join in with our Language Learning Day. Children were asked to dress up in a way that relates to their country, we had some fantastic costumes and outfits and all the children had a wonderful time!

Throughout the day, pupils engaged in many activities themed around their chosen country. Some examples of this included recalling numbers and phrases, completing maths problems with food linking to their country and experiencing poetry in the native language of their chosen country.

Thank you to all the parents, staff and pupils who participated and helped to make our Language Learning Day a success.

  • Outdoor Learning at Smith's Wood

    Published 21/05/21

It has been another fantastic week here at Smiths Wood. The rain didn't hold us back as this week, we celebrated National Outdoor Classroom Day across each year group in the school. Every class bubble had the opportunity to take one of their lessons outside. Year 3 took their data handling in Maths to the pond area where they counted which animals and insects could be found. Building on their Maths skills, year 4 used coordinates to move around the playground, and also went outside during Literacy to get inspiration for a setting description. Year 6 linked Geography to Art and created a map of Smiths Wood using materials from their outdoor surrounding areas. As well as this, KS1 joined in the fun! Year 1 made bird's nests through an outdoor Design & Technology lesson during their forest school session, whilst year 2 mind mapped adjectives surrounding Florence Nightingale using their bodies as an outline.

This week we have made the transition period back to year group bubbles.  Everything is running smoothly, with children retuning to ability-based learning.  Children have seamlessly adapted to yet another change to their year, demonstrating our pupils extremely high levels of resilience and determination.  We are so pleased to see their friendships reignited and children responsibly mixing within their respective year group bubbles, respecting each other's space.

We would like to thank you for your continued support during this time, for more pictures from our exciting week of learning, please see our gallery
