Meat Free Fridays

Our very own Harley M (Y6) has recently been featured in the prestigious Castle Bromwich Echo for his work on implementing Meat Free Fridays at Smith's Wood

Below is the full article published in the Echo, written by our Kitchen Manager Mrs J Underwood:

'I would like to introduce Harley McLaughlin. Harley has been researching affects that eating meat has on carbon emissions. He is passionate about this worthy topic and has presented his findings to key staff members and his peers.

I was invited to his presentation and was impressed at just how much effort and detail he had gone to. He discussed how 25% of all carbon emissions are caused by meat production and as a result, he has been supported by the school and Solihull Catering to encourage one Meat Free Day a week. Meat Free Fridays began at Smiths Wood Primary on 31st of January.

We invited Harley to have lunch with us for free , reward well deserved for his efforts. Friday have a variety of different dishes available – with brand new options to look forward to with the introduction of new menus from February 24th . Harleys research has led to school assembles and his year 6 friends preparing posters in support, with a view to it being recommended to those bringing in lunches of their own, Meat Free Fridays will be meat free for the whole day!'

What a fantastic achievement Harley- well done!
