  • Lockdown Learning Week 4

    Published 29/01/21

We have now reached the half way point in an eventful half term. Although there was 5 inches of snow in Smith’s Wood, we were able to open to all our key worker children, many thanks to our dedicated parents for safely bringing pupils to school.

Children who were in school on Monday were treated to playtime in the snow, there were some wonderful snow-creations.

Once again, Commando Jane has been working with our energetic pupils encouraging and encompassing our school values, perseverance, determination and resilience.

Mr Wright shared a fantastic and educational remote Science lesson this week – exploring bubbles, look out for his new Science based challenges, premiering next week!

Adding to our growing collection of remote learning opportunities, Miss Boobyer has launched a new collection of baking tutorials from her series ‘Miss Boobyer’s Baking Bonanza'. Miss Boobyer's Baking Bonanza and many other videos can be found on our Remote Learning Page

  • Lockdown Learning Week 3

    Published 22/01/21

It has been yet another fantastic week here at Smith’s Wood, jam-packed with exciting activities and lessons for both our remote learners and our children in school.

Year 3 remote learners were visited by a very special guest this week. Professor Parnell lead the science lesson, using investigative techniques to remove a paperclip out of a range of liquids using only a magnet!

Programming lessons got off to a wonderful start this week as Year 1 pupils created algorithms to guide a Beebot robot around a series of obstacles.

PSHE lessons had an exciting twist this week as Year 3 improved on their artistic skills creating sensory garden pictures to help raise awareness of children who are visually impaired. The children had a great time designing the gardens, their work can be seen in our gallery.

Mr Wright’s ‘Workout the Wright Way’ started in year 4 for remote learners this week, a great turnout and a great workout, well done Mr Wright!

We would like to thank and parents, pupils and staff for their continued support both at home and in school. With your help we can continue to provide the best, high quality provision for all our learners.

  • Lockdown Learning Week 2

    Published 18/01/21

We have had another successful week here at Smith’s Wood, where our pupils are taking part in a range of ways to engage with learning.
Mr Meers’ PE lessons went live via zoom for our remote learners to access high quality provision whilst at home, which was met with an overwhelming attendance by pupils in Reception - Year 3.
In Year 2, Disney day was a resounding success with fantastic participation from our in school bubble and our home learners.  It was wonderful to see the children dressed as their favourite characters throughout the day linked to their topic A Whole New World.
Year 5 turned their hands to improving their culinary skills by cooking a Chicken Balti, carefully slicing chicken and learning the importance of meal preparation and hygiene.

A huge thank you to all the support you have offered to the school over the few past weeks it is greatly appreciated.  This has helped us to provide high quality provision to both home learners and the children in school.

  • Reading Books During Lockdown

    Published 11/01/21

Throughout this lockdown period we want to ensure that reading continues to be a top priority for all of our pupils at Smith’s Wood Primary Academy. For pupils in school, reading will continue as normal. For pupils at home, we have put measures into place to ensure they continue to develop their reading fluency and comprehension skills.

As I am sure you are all aware, all pupils across school are already being offered a live Zoom lesson for guided reading/phonics daily. Please get in touch with us if you need support to access this provision.

In addition to this, as of Monday 11th January we want to give pupils who are at home the chance to swap their home reading book once a week. In order to do this, parents must email the school before 3pm on Monday to request a new book for that week. Please email s48parents@smithswoodpri.solihull.sch.uk and state your child’s name, class and explain that you wish to request a new reading book. We will then find a suitable book for your child and give it to the office for collection on Wednesday. Please return the old book to school on a Wednesday and collect your child’s new book. We ask that you send a new request each Monday so that we know which books to get ready.

  • Week 1 ‘Lockdown Learning’ at Smith’s Wood Primary Academy

    Published 08/01/21

What a phenomenal first week of ‘lockdown learning’ we have had here at Smith’s Wood Primary Academy.

Our ‘Remote learners’ have accessed 4 live lessons throughout the day, delivered by their year group teachers, whilst our pupils, who are in school, have continued to receive the quality provision delivered by their fantastic year group teachers. Whether you are a home learner, or are learning in school, the learning hasn’t stopped this week for our pupils- all teachers have been in school, combining lives lessons for pupils at home, as well as face to face lessons for pupils in school.

The opportunities have been endless and the commitment to learning, from all our pupils, has been outstanding. Some of our pupils, who are learning remotely at home, even dressed up for their year group’s theme day, sharing their costumes with their teacher during the live lessons on Zoom. Thank you to all the parents and pupils who have supported both remote learning and also learning in school.
