  • Walking in a Winter Wonderland

    Published 16/12/22

The children had a fantastic time at The National Forest Adventure Farm. They travelled through the North Pole Portal, met a talking polar bear, sorted presents with the elves, met Father Christmas and chose a present from Santa's workshop. The children enjoyed the tractor ride around the farm where they spotted all the snowmen. They then looked at different animals and their habitats.

  • Smith's Wood Choir Hit the High Notes!

    Published 15/12/22

The Year 4, 5 and 6 Choir have been getting into the Christmas spirit! Over the last half term, they have been working really hard on a collection of Christmas songs to perform. Last week, they had the chance to perform the songs to all their families. They all sang so beautifully and the performance was enjoyed by all.

Some of the choir also got the opportunity to go to ASDA to perform their songs to the public! Wearing their festive headgear, they produced another amazing performance to all the ASDA customers and their families who also came to support. We had so many comments about how lovely their singing was – ASDA would love them to come again!

Well Done to everyone who was involved in these performances! Merry Christmas!

  • Marcus Rashford Books at Smith's Wood

    Published 15/12/22

Father Hudson’s Care (a local charity based in Coleshill) were recently contacted by the supermarket chain Aldi to ask whether they would be interested in a donation of reading books for school children – needless to say they agreed that they would be!

The idea behind this donation of books was from Marcus Rashford MBE (Manchester United & England footballer) who wanted to get 100,000 school children reading over the summer.  Marcus teamed up with Aldi to set this campaign rolling – he arranged for 100,000 copies of his book ‘The Breakfast Club Adventures – The Beast Beyond The Fence’ to be given to Aldi for them to then share within the local community and as a charity that works closely with Aldi in Coleshill they contacted Father Hudson’s.

Father Hudson’s staff members Andrew Penny (Registered Manager, Domiciliary Care) and Paul Reynolds (New Routes Fostering) contacted local schools to offer them copies of the book – they had already given out over 7000 books to schools in the Coleshill, Water Orton, Kingshurst, Smiths Wood, Castle Bromwich, Bromford and Shard End areas.  In total, Father Hudson’s have distributed over 10,000 copies of the book to various schools and projects.

The books which were donated are ideally for ages 8-11 so they have been distributed to our Key Stage 2 pupils.

Smith’s Wood Primary Academy were keen to receive a supply of the books and we were so grateful to be contacted. The photo shows some of our pupils proudly receiving the books, along with Andrew Penny and Paul Reynolds.

We hope that the children in KS2 enjoy reading their books over the holidays.

  • Do They Know It's Christmas? They Do Now!

    Published 08/12/22

Newspaper club are proud to present a report from our Christmas Jumper/Dinner day here at Smith's Wood!

"On the 7th December, the whole school rejoiced in celebrating Christmas with a themed Christmas Jumper Day and the schools’ annual Christmas Dinner, which, as many people agree, was worth the wait.

Everyone bought in a pound with their very merry jumpers to donate to the deserving ‘Save the Children’ charity!

From the top to the bottom of Smith’s Wood Primary Academy, festive activities were taking place.

In Years 2 and 3, there was the smell of paint in the air, as the amateur artists took part in decorating their own Christmas cards!

Throughout the classes of Year 6, Christmas cards also came into play, however the leaders of the school designed and made their own from scratch. Their designs were very merry and inventive indeed!

Before settling down to a delectable Christmas Dinner, every class had some crazy cracker time! There were paper crowns and jokes everywhere!" - Samuel, Alessandra and Phoebe - Year 6

  • Y4 Evacuee children arrive at Holdenby House!

    Published 06/12/22

On Thursday 1st December, children in Year 4 experienced what life was like for an evacuee child of WW2. They arrived at Holdenby House and were greeted by the headmistress, who informed them they needed to learn a few key skills ready before they left with their host families. Following this, children experienced life in a kitchen where they learnt about rationing and using a range of ingredients to make tasty dishes. In the sewing room, children learnt how to sew buttons and do finger knitting, as well as writing Christmas cards to injured soldiers. Under Holdenby House lies the air raid shelter, where children experienced an attack on Holdenby House and learnt of the sacrifices men, women and children made during the war. At the end of the day, the children sang, ‘God Save the King’, before departing on the bus back to Smith’s Wood.
