More than a school

About Us

As the Principal at Smith’s Wood Primary Academy, I am delighted to welcome you to our school.

Smith’s Wood Primary School opened on the 7th September 2009. It was created following the bringing together of two local schools, as part of the regeneration of North Solihull. In 2014, Smith`s Wood became an Academy, creating further opportunities for the school to develop.

Now is an exciting time to join Smith’s Wood Primary Academy. Our state of the art building offers fantastic facilities both inside and outside.

Our target is to raise standards in teaching and learning in core subjects to make this the choice school for parents in the area. Smith`s Wood Primary regularly exceeds national average levels in key areas. We will improve rates of attendance and develop positive links with the wider community. Working with parents, governors and the community I feel sure we will achieve these goals.

Smith’s Wood is a large school with over 461 children. This includes nursery provision from the age of 3, before and after school wrap around care and a breakfast club. We aim to keep class sizes as low as is feasible, ensuring very positive adult/pupil ratios.

I believe that children should expect an exciting and vibrant learning environment. A significant amount of work has gone into making this a reality and more improvements are planned in the near future. We provide a unique environment in which ICT and competitive sport play key roles.

We aim to provide a safe and orderly environment, in which school uniform standards are high. We work hard to maintain positive relationships in the classroom, which form the basis of good behaviour. We believe in emphasising the positive within a framework of clear boundaries and expectations.

The name Smith’s Wood refers to the ancient area of forest close to the school, previously part of the Forest of Arden. The school badge features a large oak tree, the last remaining feature of the school previously on this site.

If you would like to see for yourself what Smith`s Wood Primary Academy has to offer, please do not hesitate to contact the office and I will be happy to show you around.

Yours sincerely,
John Talbot
